The Brabant pennant

The pennant of Noord-Brabant is one with a rich history. The distinctive checkered pennant was first used in the Middle Ages, but became available from the 18^e century temporarily unused. The pennant with the red and white chessboard pattern has only been the official pennant of North Brabant from 1959.

The colors in the Noord-Brabant pennant are, as far as is known, not a symbol of something typical of Brabant. We do see the red and white appear more often in Brabant flags and streamers: from the Middle Ages these colors are used a lot, especially in shipping. We also see the colors, for example, appearing in the flag of Antwerp, the Belgian southern neighbors of Noord-Brabant.
