In everyday life you never have to orient yourself. There are signs and signposts everywhere that will take you to your destination. As an outdoor athlete on the water, things are different, but you can often create an environment where you have to rely on your own sense of direction. Compasses are essential at various times, a compass generally helps you on two points:

• Where am I?
• Which route should I take to get to the right point?
