The diagonally striped flag with the seven pump bleaching (pumpkin leaves) has only in the last quarter of the 19e century, but the first reference to the current design can already be found in documentation from the year 1085.
The seven pompen leaves on the flag of Friesland represent the administrative units that make up the province of Friesland.
Some sources claim that there were never exactly seven of these units in Friesland; others claim that it would be West Friesland, Westergo, Oostergo, Hunzingo, Fivelingo, Emsingo and Jeverland.
