The Drentse Pennant

With its own flag, the province of Drenthe had the scoop in the Netherlands: it was the first province to fly its own official flag. It became a pennant with the colors red and white, which refer to the traditional Saxon colors.

In addition to two red orbits we find a black colored castle on the flag, which refers to the famous Coevorden castle. For a long time the province was governed from this castle. We find three red stars on both the left and right sides of the castle. The total of 6 stars symbolize the so-called 'dingpellen' of Drenthe: the areas Zuidenveld, Oostermoer, Noordenveld, Rolde, Beilen and Diever together make the territory of the province. The stars also refer to the Star of Bethlehem.
